Feeling Good Friday

A few weeks back we were sitting in the psychiatrists office waiting to see what kind of magical jellicle med combo we were going to try next with Rye and I opened up the The New Yorker and saw this cartoon by Tom Cheney.
Touche.
______
Anyhoo, Happy Friday!   I am so glad it’s the weekend.  Not that [...]

Up And Down And All Around

Holy Mother Of God, we have been on a wild ride this past month.  The impact of the move has finally hit Rye and he is struggling with Stability.  And we are all along for the ride.
On the good news of things, we do have a new psychiatrist now.  And we [...]

ADHD: To Medicate Or Not To Medicate

Every teacher and tutor Rye has ever had will tell you very clearly, he has ADHD.  I know it, we know, his pdoc knows it.  It’s obvious.  And has been since he was about 5 years old.  He has a very short attention span when it comes to traditional learning and it takes a very [...]

Summer Camp: The Review

He liked it!
He liked the overnight camp and wants to go back to another one next year.  Or maybe even two.
After picking him up I heard endless tales of intrigue.  We went and had lunch and he told me stories of good times, stories of bad times, stories of nice kids and stories of mean [...]

The Psychiatric Hospital: The Good, The Bad & The Ugly

Well, it’s been 2 weeks and we are now home from Rye’s inpatient hospitalization.  What a ride this has all been.  In fact, we got home yesterday and my head is still spinning and I’m not even sure I can write a decent post.  But here goes…
What was good about the hospital?

It seems to have [...]

The Depakote Is Starting To Work

Rye has been on Depakote now for 2 weeks and we are definitely starting to see some changes for the positive.   What are we seeing?
Well, he is able to do his school work every day.  All of it.  Yes, he still doesn’t want to do it.  No change there.  But he does it anyway.  And [...]

Just a quick post to say we are seeing a little progress.  Rye is off the Abilify today as he took it for 2 days and it did calm the extreme mania but made him feel bad so now he is just on the Depakote and the Depakote is starting to kick in.  Rye is [...]

Mania vs Hypomania

For us, here’s the difference:
Hypomania : Silliness, laughing, hyper, fast talking,  slight pressure, funny voices, funny faces, exceedingly happy, hyper, overactive but fun to be around, creative, productive, loving, irritability but it passes
Mania: hitting, spitting, yelling, destroys property, lifts furniture, pressure, pressure, pressure, swearing, threatening, extreme irritability, broken or little sleep, bad choices, seems to [...]

The Beauty Is In The Story

Rye is having a hard time right now.  He is amped and all over the place.  We started the Depakote and are hoping that helps soon.   My patience is wearing thin and in times like this I have to remind myself that rarely in life is one’s story easy.  And when it is too easy, [...]

Mother’s Day In Asheville

As Don is in New York for the week visiting his family and friends for Mother’s Day, Rye and I decided to head to Asheville, NC with Gam for the weekend.   We knew it was a gamble as Rye is very manic right now but we decided what the heck and went anyway.  And, as [...]

Sunday Review On A Monday

The events of last week:
We headed back to the Neurologist and Rye had a sleep deprived EEG.  We didn’t get optimal results because despite the fact that he was really tired, Rye was so nervous about it that he never did fall asleep during the test.  So…it wasn’t what it could have been.
We also saw [...]
