What Can I Do To Help?

Over the years in raising Rye I have learned a thing or two about a thing or two.   Not through therapy, not through books, not through the advice of doctors,  just through hands-on day-to-day dealing with the issues, needs, and complexities of raising a child with bipolar disorder and seeing what works and what doesn’t.  [...]

Derailed

It was overdue, I guess.  Things have been really good for months now despite nonstop huge life changes.
I spent the last day and a half with a derailed Rye.  He called me from school the morning after last completely frantic.  Seven calls in a row.   Each with a new physical ailment for which he needed [...]

The New Psychiatrist

We met with the new psychiatrist this week.  Or what may become the new psychiatrist.  I say ‘may’ because I have also made an appointment with another psychiatrist so we’ll see who we like better.
So, how was he?  Well, ok, I guess.  This one is fairly young.  He’s less than 10 years out of med [...]

Stability and Emotional Maturity

I’ll tell you, this has been quite a summer for us.  Rye is doing really well.  If you didn’t know him well or he didn’t tell you (he’s very open with telling people he is bipolar), you would have no idea that he is bipolar.
He is that stable.
One of the things I have noticed recently [...]

Dr. Stuart Kaplan: Childhood Bipolar Disorder vs. ADHD

_______

As for Dr. Stuart Kaplan and his Newsweek article, here are my thoughts.
Thank you Newsweek Magazine for your cutting edge journalism and breaking scientific studies but Dr. Kaplan is about 20-30 years late [...]

ADHD: To Medicate Or Not To Medicate

Every teacher and tutor Rye has ever had will tell you very clearly, he has ADHD.  I know it, we know, his pdoc knows it.  It’s obvious.  And has been since he was about 5 years old.  He has a very short attention span when it comes to traditional learning and it takes a very [...]

Disheartened

Well, I’ll tell you, we are having a great time on our trip.  I will say, though, that on this trip I have been spending quite a bit of time reading blogs, reading books, and reading articles  in the evenings when the world becomes quiet.
And I am disheartened.
This week I was asked to speak on [...]

Explosive Children, Bipolar Children on Oprah

The 7 year old who tried to kill his mom.
I’ll admit, because we do not watch much television I had no idea this show was on until I read about it on the internet.   And my first thought when I saw that the show was coming on was, What happened to HIPPA and Children’s Right [...]

The biggest issue we find with [...]

Adrenaline and Mania

One lesson we learned the hard way last year is that for Rye there is a direct correlation between repeated exposure to or engagement in adrenaline producing activities and the rise of mania.   And for us, this is definitely something that needs to be watched because this kid seeks out adrenaline producing activities and absolutely [...]

Accepting The Diagnosis

I’ve been thinking a lot about 2010 and what Don, Rye and I did, what we experienced, what we tried that worked, what we tried that didn’t work, where we went, how we fared, what it all means, etc., etc.
And I’ve come to the realization that one of the greatest accomplishments we made as a [...]
