I’m Going To Run Away

I’m going to run away and write a book about it.  This is what Rye said to me yesterday.

To which I said:

Cool, have fun.

Don’t let any weird men in cars pick you up along the way.

It might be hard to find chocolate milk out there.

What will you do for money?   You know, at some point you’ll need money.

If the police pick you up as a runaway, be sure and give them a fake name.  I would hate to have them dampen your fun.

Who will you talk to?

Do you think you’ll get lonely?

You know, we don’t know any ‘Jim the Slave’s to go with you, with slavery being banished and all.

It’s still kind of cold outside.

Where will you stay?

Will it be dark?

Will it be scary?

When you sleep outside there are bugs.  Some of them bite.  And some are poisonous.

What will you eat?

How long will you be gone?  Long enough for dad and I to schedule a vacation?

Wait, did you just say you are going to write a book??  That’s great!  Now I can cancel the writing tutor.  She is costing us a fortune and I had no idea we didn’t need her anymore.

You know you can write the book about running away without actually running away.

It just seems so much easier.

But I understand.  Authenticity and all.  You are a purist and that’s just how it has to be for you.

The tutor will miss you.

I will miss you.

Dad will miss you.

The dogs will miss you.

We sure love you.

But I understand you need to do what you need to do.  Adventure calls.

Take care.

And let us know when your book gets published.

We’d like to read about how you are doing.

We love you, Rye.

After mulling it over a bit, he decided to just go to his Pa-Paw’s  instead.

Idealism is fun but he’s a realist at heart.
