This is a beautiful documentary.
I started watching The Horse Boy yesterday via Netflix Online on a lark and I can’t even begin to tell you how moved I was by it. Two minutes into it and I was totally drawn in and could not take my eyes off of it for the entire hour and a half. It is an incredibly moving story of a family from Texas with an autistic son. The son is having a very rough time handling the autism, as are the parents, and the dad decides to take the family to Mongolia in search of some Sherpas that might be able to heal his son. The mom, dad and son embark on a journey that is nothing less than breathtaking.
The emotional pain and anxiety of the parents is very respectfully and accurately portrayed. You are drawn to feel for the parents as much as for the child and any parents of special needs kids of any kind will be moved by the parent’s journey. I was also very impressed by the American Medical Specialists they had interviews with and their incredibly positive views of autism and diversity of mind types in general and the benefits they provide to our society. I found myself in tears many times as I watched it. There are also some interesting references to the mom’s grandmother and her battle with manic depression and subsequent rage and negativity and how that anger may have traveled through and affected the mom via the line of women in the family and the mom’s healing involved with that.
This is one of the best documentaries I’ve seen in a long time.
