Uncomfortably Numb: The Documentary of Antidepressant Withdrawal

I originally saw the information about this documentary on this post from the blog Beyond Meds and I was so moved by it I wanted to post it here as well to help spread the word.

Minnesota filmmaker Phil Lawrence tries to wean himself off anti-depressant medicine, to avoid the pills’ effects of leaving him emotionally “numb,” and documents the profound changes that affect him and his family. -City Pages

I look forward to seeing this when it is released.

  1. Hi Meggers,
That looks like a good one. I am adding it to my list of “to watch”. Also, thanks for the gardening inspiration– your yard is gorgeous! xo-KO

    Meg,

Thank you for posting this. I found out about it on the Paxil Progress Boards.

As an FYI, he feels he tapered too quickly thanks to his doctor’s suggestion. I would post the link to the relevant thread on Paxil Progress Boards but I fear your software will think I am spamming:) That is what happened the last time I posted links.

Anyway, I have had great success following the advice of the boards to taper at 10% of current dose every 3 to 6 weeks. I still have had many problems but if I had tapered too quickly, I am convinced it would have been alot worse.

The co-moderator of the boards tried twice previously to quit Paxil but failed because she tapered too quickly. Once she followed the 10% rule, she was successful.

Obviously, people have to do what they think is best and one size doesn’t fit all. But it just seems to me that going slowly based on people’s experiences, including the guy featured in the films, that going slow has the best chance of success.

One more thing – If people are looking for studies on withdrawal, they barely exist.

Thanks AA. You should be able to post that link. I think the software holds or blocks any comment with more than one link as spam.

Also, I find it’s nearly impossible to find research studies on anything that the pharmaceutical companies don’t want to fund as they fund and control most of the health research in this country. That’s why pieces like this are so important, in my opinion.

See response 18 in particular by Phil.

I agree movies like this are important. Hopefully, somebody in the medical community is paying attention. Unfortunately, the cynical part of me believes they will give the typical yes but excuse.
