The week in summary:
Monday we went to the Neurologist. I have to say, we were pleasantly surprised. The doctor was a female and she was the most personable and friendly Neurologist I’ve ever met. In my experience Neurologists are usually a bit dry, conceited and brusk. However, she was quite the opposite. She was friendly, engaging, she asked Rye a bunch of questions directly and listened to him. It was nice. She did say he might be having seizures and ordered a sleep deprived EEG that we do this week. These don’t catch all seizures as you have to have one during the EEG to see it but we have to try. She said if this doesn’t show anything we can do an ambulatory EEG if we want or we can just try an anti-convulsant medication and see if that helps. She said that often works and helps with ones that might take tests and tests and tests to find.
In other news, Rye had a boxing lesson and is realizing he has a long way to go to get in good shape – as we all do around here [and just a note for anyone who has their panties in a bunch over this and thinks I'm crazy for having him do boxing, take heed that his trainer and I have a grain of sense and know that he is not nearly old enough to box other people or even spar with other people and that even if he was, violence is not my or Rye's thing. This is all just physical training with a trainer using foot work and punching bags and can be very self empowering from a self defense stand point. It's a good way to get in shape and learn some self defense at the same time and the majority of the people this guy trains never actually box other people].
In a proud moment for Don and I as parents, Rye is now able to stand his 4 wheeler completely up. Admittedly, not something that even in my wildest dreams I though I’d hear myself say. Gads, could we be more redneck? I hate 4 wheelers. But the thing does have a fall back bar so it can’t flip back and he does stand when he does it and knows how to be safe. We made sure of that. And he’s a thrill seeker, no doubt about it. He loves anything mechanical or with forward motion. The 4 wheeler is getting more attention now that the old dirt bike has finally bit the dust. I can already see that a dirt bike will be what he wants for his birthday. I can feel it coming. And I have to admit, dirt bikes are serious fun. I get that. I want one too.
Today we go to the open house for Rye’s summer sleep over camp so we are heading to that soon. I have to say, he seems genuinely excited about it. And I’m happy for him. I used to love sleep away summer camp when I was growing up and it’d be great for him to have that same experience. He’s hoping they have a zip line. I guess we’ll see.
And that’s about it. Rye wants to start writing songs and we started one the other night. He likes the bluesy-rock vibe. I have no idea how to write music and neither does he so we are going to be like two lost idiots trying to do this but that’s ok. We’ll try and eventually we’ll figure it out. He’s good at writing lyrics and coming up with melodies so if that’s the way I can get him to do creative writing, so be it. At least he’s writing something and creating something. It’s all good. One of the many advantages of homeschooling, no doubt.
I hope everyone has a nice Sunday.
