Unsolicited advice alert! Tell him there are no after school activities or weekend activities if he misses school. Specifically, the day of absence, no after school activity that day. The middle school where I have taught and my kids all attended has that policy for on campus school socials etc. (absent that day, no social).

I've been through most of what you are dealing with now with your son, and can practically write you a book on how this will all pan out!

It's amazing how they can have the energy and the social capabilities when they WANT to, ie mall, etc. but school means work, and required work (attending) often brings up the anxiety/avoidance issue.

I'd announce it tonight if you haven't already, or at least in the AM when (IF)he decides he isn't going (it's Monday!).

Good luck (also the cell phone is a great object to use for tough love purpose as well, after all, you pay for it)
