The Great Debate

I only have a minute to post today because I need to get to work but….

Now that I have entered the blog world I have been made aware that there is a huge debate going on out there in the blogosphere as to whether childhood bipolar disorder (and this would include teens) is a real diagnosis or not and/or if the children involved should be medicated.

I’m intrigued.

I know that for us we did not use medication until our son’s life was not working well without it.  And by not working well I mean he was having delusions, seeing things, losing friends due to over-the-top erratic behavior and was becoming miserable.

He now takes 2mg of Abilify a day and has his life back.

I know there are people that don’t agree with this.  And that is ok.  I am not a pro-med person myself and am very leery of all meds.

But for right now this has given him his life back.  His friends trust him and want to be with him again, he does not think the computers at school want to kill him, he does not have internal conversations.  He is happy and is having a fulfilling life.

There are people in the world that are going to criticize you for anything you do in life – especially as a parent.  My son is very happy and is happy to have his friends back and have some control over his behavior.

If at some point the med stops working or we have to up the dose we will not up it but will go off all meds again for a while and see where that leads us.  Maybe as his hormones from puberty calm down, so will his internal workings.

I’d love for him to be off all meds – that is optimal.

We’ll see what the future brings.
